Update from the Treasurer - Year 2007
Over this year and last we have spent the huge sum of £250,000
on Kusala House (previously known as Number 5 Cottage) and the now infamous but
necessary sewage system mostly from small donations, but also with the generous
support from a few larger donors.
As I forecast last year, we have, indeed, had to use up ALL
the monastery's financial reserves, the Ageing Samana's Fund and the Endowment
Fund prior to its investment. And yet there is still about £20,000 of work to do
to finish off Kusala House internally – a kitchen, flooring and the completion
of the meditation room.
We are therefore still in URGENT need of finance to restore
our 'borrowed' reserves and finish the interior of Kusala House so that it can
function fully as a guest/retreat accommodation – I estimate about £85,000 over
the next couple of years.
Kathina
The monastery enjoyed a very successful Kathina in October. As part of the
offering the Burmese community and others donated the sum of approximately
£10,000.
Future Work
Since then we have heard that we need to make some building changes in the main
house to conform to Fire Regulations. This means that, at the same time, we will
need to re-design the kitchen area – at a cost of about £10,000. As Kusala House
will be busy in 2008 with Retreats and visitors we are planning to complete the
kitchen there this spring so that retreatants and guests have the facilities
they need. So kitchens will very much be on our mind! As with the main kitchen,
we need machines, kitchen units and joinery work.
