Kusala House Update January to March 2008

In the autumn months the Kusala House has taken further small but firm steps towards the finishing line: thanks to the efforts of Rolf Wojciechowski, Ajahn Go and friends, the upstairs bathrooms are now practically completed and fully usable; the car park lighting has been installed; Ajahn Go constructed a magnificent retaining wall in the future Kusala House meditation garden;  plus all the other retaining walls have been completed with capping stones by our friend Martin Reilly, except  for, as some of you will have seen, the main wall along the car park entrance, which instead received a punkish green hair cut made of toughened grass! An idea that was conceived by Anagarika David who, as an ex greenkeeper on the Old Course at St. Andrews, knows about grassy matters. The company which sponsored the grass seed is so impressed with the initial results that they asked to publish an article in their magazine about it! So, Harnham sports another sight of outstanding beauty worth a visit.  The new sewage system still needs a bit of attention from the electrician and plumber to complete the recycling loops but, otherwise, is fully and satisfactorily functioning.

During the Winter Retreat only our infatigable Rolf will keep coming once a week to fit out the new workshop next to the reed beds. He hopes to have it ready by April when we plan to ‘move shop’, preparing the present one for its final use as meditation room and accommodation. This will be provisional, in order to get the room usable in time for the new retreat season starting in May. For the final refurbishment of the future meditation room we still need to find the necessary funds.

If you would like to give us a hand with the outstanding work, short or long term, please contact the monastery after the Winter Retreat. If you would like to assist us in emptying the present workshop please read the following note:

Volunteer Days - Dates for your diary

We are planning to hold volunteer days on Saturday 19th and Saturday 26th April 2008.  The main job will be to clear out the present workshop and prepare it for use as accommodation and meditation practice. It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible on either or both of the days.  For more information contact Caroline Dower on 01670 774404.
